Mozilla wrenches infected add-ons and warns users

2/08/2010 13:11:53 PM

Last Friday, Mozilla made two programs from its Firefox browser add-on site for having the content of malware activities. Web Video Downloader 4.0 and all versions of Master Filer were found to contain Trojan horse code, which specifically aimed at Windows users. In a blog post, Mozilla commented that Master Filer Add-On was able to bypass AMO's security tests.

Mozilla added two more security checks to its vetting process and re-scanned the whole catalog. It discovered that version 4 of the Sothink Web Video Downloader also contained a Trojan horse program. Sothink Web Video Downloader contained Win32.LdPinch.gen and Master Filer contained Win32.Bifrose.32.Bifrose.

Master Filer was removed from Mozilla's Firefox add-on website on January 25 and the Sothink video downloader was eliminated on Tuesday. The website ceased hosting the Sothink add-on on Friday before noon. Sothink Web Video Download 5.5.90819 had been a gently popular and Firefox add-on at Download.com received 697 downloads in the past week and 63,716 downloads, since it was first added to the website in the time of June 2007.

Trojan horse programs are complied with Firefox and Mozilla warns that host computers would not be infected until Firefox began. Un-installation either add-on is only a part of the solution and if the infection has already attacked the host computer. Mozilla recommends that users suspecting that they have infected use one of the following security applications for sweeping and cleaning their computers after uninstalling the threatening add-on:
•Ikarus
•Antiy-AVL
•McAfee
•Norman
•AVG
•GData
•K7 AntiVirus
•Avast
•VBA32

Infected users need to note that only Avast and AVG are free of cost and rest all are paid.
